Buying
Privately
It is important to ask the right questions as private sellers
are under no obligation to tell you the vehicle's history,
they are selling the vehicle 'as seen'.
Things
to consider include:
Why are they selling it.
How long have they owned it.
How many previous owners are shown on the vehicle registration
document.
Look at the MOT certificate (where applicable) and check the
mileage and usage since the MOT.
Ask if there is outstanding finance.
Always view the vehicle at the seller's home and get the seller's
landline telephone number not just a mobile.
Look at the vehicle's service history and/or receipts for
work carried out.
Make sure you get a receipt for any payment you make.
Has it got or can you get a warranty (vehicles advertised
on this site come with a free months engine and gearbox warranty).
"When
buying a used car you need a good warranty to cover you against
the cost of parts and labour following a mechanical and electrical
failure."
Duncan McClure Fisher, Operations Director Warranty Direct.

Buying from a Dealer
Whilst you pay a higher price than buying privately you will
have the convenience of arranging a PX and there's also the
opportunity to sort out finance, insurance, servicing etc.
The vehicles normally come with a warranty and providing you
use a reputable dealer you will benefit from the fact that
they are likely to be members of trade associations and work
to a code of conduct.
Furthermore, you will be protected by the sale of goods act
so that your purchase must meet an acceptable standard.
Trade vehicles are available on our vehicle
search
or look at our directory
listings for your nearest dealer.
Buying
via Auction
This is an option that is not for the nervous or first time
buyer. There are bargains to be had but with a little or no
time to test drive or check a vehicle's history you need to
have confidence in your knowledge. It's a good idea to take
a friendly mechanic with you!
Remember too that the price agreed is plus the auctioneer's
commission.

Buying from a Car Supermarket
Althouh the selection can be limited to basic models
they may be cheaper than those from a dealer. You will need
to take into consideration the level of after sales service
and whether a warranty is available.
Buying
an Import
There are savings to be had by going down this route depending
on exchange rates. You will need to bear in mind future servicing
but many models offer different or better specification to
those available in the UK.
You will
always need to ensure you use a reputable importer. Look at
our directory
for details of importers.
