| DRIVING IN WINTER CONDITIONS BEFORE WINTER SETS IN 1. Make sure your vehicle has had a service. 2. Put antifreeze in the radiator and check for any leaks. 3. Check that the battery is in good condition. 4. Make sure the tyres (including the spare) have plenty of tread and are correctly inflated. 5. Check wipers and washers are working correctly, and that washer bottles contain anti-freezing additive 6. Make sure all lights are clean and working effectively. BEFORE SETTING OFF IN SEVERE CONDITIONS 1. Ask yourself is the journey absolutely necessary, or can it be put off? 2. Consider taking the following equipment with you, in case you get into difficulties, warm footwear and clothing, a mobile phone, a hot drink and some food, a spade and torch, fluorescent jacket and a warning triangle. 3. Check local weather and travel information. 4. Ensure that you have a full tank of fuel. 5. Make sure all windows and mirrors are free of snow & ice. 6. Plan your journey. TIPS WHEN DRIVING 1. Look out for pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. 2. If visibility is poor, switch to dipped headlights. 3. Reduce your speed and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front. 4. Do not brake, accelerate or steer harshly. 5. Don't hang on to the tail lights of the vehicle in front. |
